Michael Vick Atlanta Falcons Quarterback

An elementary student who first showed an interest in baseball and basketball, Michael Vick later developed his love of football. Bo in June 1980, this Newport News, Virginia native is now the quarterback for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.

In his early teens, Vick became involved in football as his choice after-school activity. At that time, he seemingly gave up all other sports in order to concentrate on football. Through high school, his love of football flourished and carried over into his college years. Attending Virginia Teach, Michael Vick gained instant stardom as a collegiate player with 3 rushing touchdowns during his first game. With the help of Vick, the Virginia Tech Hokies enjoyed a phenomenal 11-0 season and secured a seat at the 2000 Bowl Championship Series. Even though they were defeated by Florida, Michael Vick led the team to an impressive comeback after being 21 points down at one point.

During Michael Vick's inaugural collegiate season, he led the NCAA in passing efficiency, which eaed him a record setting year for a freshman. Additionally, he was awarded the ESPY award as the nation's top college player, the inaugural Archie Griffin Award and was voted third in the 1999 Heisman Trophy candidates. With all of the awards and recognition, all eyes quickly became fixed on Michael Vick's participation with the Virginia Tech Hokies. In 2001, however, he decided to pursue his dream of professional football and set his sites on the NFL as Virginia Tech retired his jersey.

In a strange twist of fate, Michael Vick found himself as part of the 2000 Major League Baseball draft when the Colorado Rockies selected him for their team. A game that he had once given up during his teen years now seemed like a probable route for the college athlete. However, Vick had other plans in mind. In 2001, the Atlanta Falcons selected the youngster for their number one NFL draft pick. Despite several injuries, Michael Vick led the Falcons to a record 11-5 season in 2004 and has led the NFL franchise to be one of most competitive teams in the league.

As quarterback, Michael Vick's memorabilia and his replica jerseys have become one of the bestsellers for the NFL. The apparel and collectibles industry remains one of the largest revenue producing sectors of any sport, including the NFL. As fans flock to find their favorite gear, many seem to be lining up for anything pertaining to Michael Vick and his tremendous contribution to the Atlanta Falcons and the National Football League.

Bet for Value Bad Numbers in College Football

A handicapper is only as good as their last pick and a gambler is only as good as the last game they bet. Both 'cappers and gamblers share in the immutable fact that a play is only as good as the number you get. Successful handicappers and bettors bet good numbers and avoid bad ones.

Last Saturday North Texas was installed as a 5-point underdog on the road at MTSU. However, those +5 points were bet down to four so if you missed the five points you were not getting the best number you could (unless you bought the point) get on the game therefore grabbing four points (and considering other key factors in our analysis) was in our estimation a bad number.

Likewise, for the EMU-ULL tilt, the game opened up –5 for the Eagles and steamed to –7. Again we grabbed the seven points since laying the number looked like a possible win or a push. In fact it tued out it was another bad number got covered. These are the exceptions that prove the rule. Last week we went against two teams with bad numbers that both originated at 5 and then went in opposite directions. We thought the line had moved in our direction but it did not and leaves us an unpalatable 0-2 hole after one week playing in the NCAA.

While we lost on both plays last weekend (in no small part to a tremendous amount of tuovers by both teams) we stand by our handicapping and believe that both those games were victimized by the 'intangibles' that every handicapper and bettor knows can happen. As an old bookie once told me, "Chris, you always talk about your losses first. You don't lea anything from a win."

Then thank god we're leaing something cause I'd hate a 0-2 record to go to waste.

Last Week Value Bets Recrap (0-2)
An E-mailer asked me last week where the value is in betting on two losing picks? My response was that they were winning picks that happened to lose. Inherent in recrapping a losing week is the fact that no matter how it is done, the loser (me) often sounds whinny and pathetic. However, nothing bus our collective handicapping ass than losing games against the spread that we should not have lost. Without making any excuses let's go beyond the scoreboard and find out how we lost and why.

Looking at our first game, we correctly identified the weaknesses in North Texas and their red-shirt freshman QB Daniel Meager as well as the inexperience on the DL. Indeed, Meager was, eh-hem, meager as he ended the game 10-15 for 122 yards. MTSU held Mean Green to only 274 yards on total offense, of which a small majority, 152 yards were on the ground. Not exactly the dominating run game we have grown accustomed to from North Texas. On the flip side, the Blue Raiders came out and dominated on offense from a yardage perspective as they got 383 yards in total offense and a TD. We mentioned that the unseasoned DL would have difficulty stopping the Blue Raiders-which they did. However, the differences in this game were five critical tuovers by the Blue Raiders of which three were interceptions. As if tuovers weren't bad enough, Maurice Holman intercepted a pass at the North Texas 1 yard line and retued it 99 yards for a TD! The bad luck continued as game breaking WR Chris Henry (60 catches last year) broke his leg in the fourth quarter. North Texas ultimately won the contest 14-7 (after being shut-out in the first half). The final score could have easily been 14-7 in favor of the Blue Raiders and an easy cover-but that is what happens when you bet on college football. Simply stated, if you backed North Texas last week you were lucky to win your wager. Period.

In our second play of the weekend we advised a play on the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette grabbing seven points on the road at Easte Michigan Eagles. While the Eagles had an easy win on paper, the fact they held the Cajuns to only 10 points was the first time the Eagles had held an opponent to 10 points since 1998! Looking at the Cajuns we figured the game as a high scoring affair with little or no defense. Again the Cajuns killed us on tuovers. ULL recorded 410 yards of total offense (182 rushing, 228 passing), but lost four fumbles! If you managed to tune in the game you saw the Cajuns only scored two times out of four trips inside the twenty. Regarding the Eagles we anticipated the stellar play of senior QB Matt Bohnart was impressive with two passing and two rushing TDs. In the win, Bohnart's stats were 26-of-36 passing for 263 yards. Bohnart also rushed for 85 yards. Costly tuovers and the inability to score once inside the red zone as well as EMU defense playing better than they have in seven years all accounted for our second loss last weekend.

As we continue this season we are reminded that gambling is a marathon and not a sprint. This week we've rooted out two more fugly games for our weekend's college sports investment.

Baylor Bears (-5.5) at ARMY (o/u 54)
Baylor opened at four points and was bet up to 5.5 quicker than you can say Oscar Robinson. The total has dropped from 55 to 54. Bettors looking for value on the money line can get +180 backing the Black Knights while you'll be laying a bit more than 2/1 backing the Bears.

How much should you read into Baylor's road win at SMU since last week SMU defeated TCU? Probably not too much as TCU's loss was no doubt caused in part by a Sooner hangover. But still, with a win at West Point, the Bears could go 3-0 for the first time since 1996. Army-Baylor is hardly a college football tradition for most of the country, but the two times in their history that these teams played one another (as if that has any damn bearing on the game played on Saturday) Baylor has won both contests. In fact the last time these two teams met at West Point in 1979 the Bears won 55-0.

Army moved to the Independents over the winter, which provided the Black Knights an immediate benefit of playing a lighter schedule than they have had in years past. This is HC Bobby Ross' second year at Army and the Black Knights have seasoned QB Zac Dahman and Carlton Jones running the ball effectively. While the Black Knights only won two games last year the move to the Independents could actually mean that Army doubles last year's win total, but they'll have to play better (and tackle better) than they did at BC. Until that happens Army might have a hard time winning any games this year.

The Baylor Bears have had a hard time as a member of the Big 12. They were out gained by 232 ypg in Big 12 play in 2003 and managed to cut that number to 142.1 ypg in 2004. Credit goes to HC Guy Morriss who brings a talented team who have only gotten better over recent years. That might not be a huge compliment considering that in conference play the Bears are 6-66 SU since joining the Big 12. However, this is a favorable out of conference match for the Bears and they should easily cover the number this week.

Gamblers betting on this game should note that the Bears are 8-2 ATS before a bye week while the Black Knights are 6-12-1 against the spread in their last 20 games at home. Finally, double check the weather charts on Saturday before you bet this game.

PICK: Baylor –5.5 for $330

Wyoming (+3) at AIR FORCE (54.5 o/u)
Game 163/164 on your card had the Air Force Academy as 2-point home favorites with the total set at 52.5. Air Force has since risen to a 3-point 'chalk' with the total soaring to 54.5 as gamblers anticipate a high scoring affair. Those looking for value added to the line can back the Cowboys at +125 or lay –145 to back the Falcons in Fort Collins.

Falcon's QB Shaun Caey has Air Force fans believing they can win the Mountain West this year. But they'll need their other players to step up to the challenge if they hope to make that a reality. Coming off their first losing season in years, the one positive for the Falcons is that last year's squad scored at least 20+ points in all but one game (Califoia) and protecting Caey this year is Air Force's best OL in recent memory.

The Falcons HC Fisher DeBerry has had only two losing seasons in 21 years! Following the losing year his teams have gone on to win eight games. Of last year's squad that went 5-6 SU (3-4 MWC) and 5-5 ATS, DeBerry lost only 17 lettermen, which is most likely one reason why the Falcons have overcome double-digit deficits in both of their wins this season. But how long can you spot a team 10+ points and keep winning?

Saturday's game should be an excellent Mountain West match-up between two teams with a legitimate shot of winning the MWC title. Air Force is undefeated this year-but barely. They beat the Washington Huskies 20-17 in Seattle and won at home last weekend against the Aztecs of San Diego State 41-29. The Falcons rode their running backs most of the day, running the ball a total of 67 times for 272 yards! Kendrick finished the game with 128 yards on 26 attempts and four TDs eaing him Offensive Player of the Week in the Mountain West.

The Cowboys quietly had a great year last year notching a money eaing 8-3 record ATS and a 7-5 SU record and a Bowl Bid. This year Wyoming retus 17 starters – the most in the Mountain West. QB Bramlet is on pace to score a few TDs per game through the air and build on last year's offense that averaged 26.5 points per game. This year the Cowboys hope to rely more upon play-action. Last week Seldon rushed for 121 yards against UL-Monroe so you can take that in the spirit as it was given. The shut-out gives Wyoming a skewed points against defensive ranking, however, the Cowboys held Urban Meyer's Gators powerful attack to only 32 points at the Swamp. The Cowboys currently have the top rushing defense in the Mountain West, allowing only 92.5 ypg on the ground, and with the pass defense permitting 223 ypg, the unit as a whole ranks third in the league in total defense, giving up 315.5 ypg.

If you are laying your hard-eaed cash on this play you should know that in this series the home team is only 2-5 against the spread in the last seven games. Air Force sports an 8-5 SU record over the last 13 games against Wyoming; however, the Falcons are only 6-7 against the spread versus Wyoming. Last year, Wyoming was the home favorite and easily covered the two-point spread winning 43-26.

PICK: Wyoming +3 for $330

T O Out With a Whimper

In the end, after all the driveway sit-ups, after all the ESPN interviews, after all the locker room fights, the Terrell Owens saga ended with just 14 words.

"The Philadelphia Eagles today announced they have terminated the contract of WR Terrell Owens."

And with that one-sentence statement released by the Eagles today, one of the most tumultuous relationships between player and team in the history of sports has concluded.

Terrell Owens is no longer the problem of the Philadelphia Eagles organization, a fact I am sure the franchise is happy about. T.O. is now an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team he chooses. Or, perhaps more accurately, with any team that is willing to risk signing him.

But anyone who thinks we've heard the last of Terrell Owens has another thing coming. Unless he signs with a team in the AFC West (which is possible, considering the Broncos and Chiefs are among the teams most rumored to be interested in his services) the Eagles will have face T.O. again on the field at some point.

And you can believe that the hype leading up to an Owens-Eagles match-up will be covered more heavily than the first moon landing.

What would the nightmare scenario be for Birds fans? I'll give you a hint… it involves a star, the President's home state, and the most vile sports organization in the history of the world. T.O.'s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has met with Cowboys coach Bill Parcells about a contract over the last few weeks, and owner Jerry Jones has made no bones about the fact he'd love to have a player of Owens' caliber on the 'Boys.

Owens in Dallas. The thought makes me want to scoop out my own eyes with a melon baller. But it's a real possibility.

And make no mistake, Owens is going to a have a monster year in 2006. He'll be playing on an incentive-laden contract with a chip on his shoulder and doing his best "I'm a good boy" routine. Whatever team takes a chance on Owens is going to have a motivated, super-talented, team-first player on their hands, a guy who can single-handedly take them to the Super Bowl.

It's going to look a lot like the happy marriage we experienced with His Majesty in 2004.

Unfortunately, to the victors go the spoils. And whatever team does have the cajones to take Owens into the fold is going to have an impossible brat on their hands in season number two, much like the Eagles did last season. T.O. will be coming off a highly productive season on what will probably be a contract that is far below what he would have gotten from the Eagles, and will once again demand a new deal.

How that team chooses to handle the situation is up to them, but I'm giving fair waing that it's going to happen. So whoever is thinking about bringing him aboard better prepare for that contingency. If it's Dallas, then I'm rooting for it to happen. Anyone else, God be with you.

Anyone who believes Owens' days as a premier wide receiver are over is fooling himself. T.O. is still the most talented wideout in the game, and he will make whoever signs him immediately better next year. Heaven help us if he faces the Birds in 2006. Playing an angry Terrell Owens is not a good thing.

But for today, Owens is no longer the Eagles' headache. After one year of unsurpassing glory followed by a year of incredible heartache and agony, Terrell Owens will be somebody else's blessing/curse in 2006 and beyond. Having been through the roller coaster ride that is T.O. on my roster, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. But someone is going to take a chance on him.

Here's hoping the Birds won't have to face a ticked-off Terrell Owens in 2006. Otherwise he'll have us all reaching for that great big bottle of Excedrin one last time.

Sports Handicapping Free Pro Football Picks Steelers Bengals 1 8 06

On January 8th, 2006, the Steelers will go into Cincinnati to play the Bengals in an AFC North playoffs showdown. The Steelers have dominated the AFC North over the past decade but yielded the division title to the Bengals this season.

Both teams finished the season 11-5 but because the Bengals have a better division record, they won the division. With the Bengals having home field advantage, they should be favorites, right? Wrong. The Steelers are giving up 3.5 points. This is all based on the public perception that these Steelers are great from them going to the AFC Championship game last season. The only thing keeping the Steelers from having a better record this season was the injury to Big Ben Roethlisberger. The public knows this.

Normal football sports handicapping suggest betting on home underdogs in a division rivalry game. The public is not looking at the Bengals home field advantage and this can spell a lot of trouble to the public.

The Bengals lost the first game in this matchup this season by two TDs. The media portrayed this matchup as the litle brother-big brother rivalry where the big brother always wins. The second game between the two teams showed the Bengals dominating offensively.

The Steelers dominate with their rush defense but the Bengals strength is their passing game which will give the Bengals the edge.

I suggest taking the 3.5 points with the Bengals as our free pro football picks.

We offer great premium free pro football picks that are based on solid sports handicapping information.

NFL Football Free Picks Carolina Panthers At Chicago Bears

Defense wins championships. You've all heard of this cliché. But, this will be the determining factor in today's matchup against the Panthers of Carolina against Da Bears of Chicago. Both teams are strong defensively and both teams are poor offensively.

In their earlier matchup this past November, the Bears came away with a 13-3 victory at Soldier field; I fully expect them to finish off the inconsistent Carolina Panthers this Sunday. The Bears will still be at Soldier field.

The Bears defense is allowing a paltry 12.6 ppg and an alarming 7.6 ppg at home! Bears games this year have been going under (o/u 4-10-2) mainly due to this fact. Although I see this game going over the projected total this Sunday, I still see Carolina not getting more than 14 points in this matchup.

If the Bears score early, they will score often. Teams coming off underdog wins in playoffs have a pretty nasty ATS record their next game; not to mention the fact that the Panthers shutout their opponent in their last game…this game has rout written all over it. The Bears should make the trip out West next Sunday to play the Seattle Seahawks.

Today's free picks include the Bears giving up less than a field goal today.

1 16 04 NFL Divisional Playoffs New England Patriots At Denver Broncos

The latest NFL Football Odds has the Denver Broncos only favored by 3 points.

Denver comes into this re-match winning the first game 28-20 last October, and will surely be fired up for their first playoff game since the 2000-2001 season. Though it is true that Tom Brady is 10-0 in the playoffs and Plummer hasn't exactly proven himself to be a "playoff-type" quarterback, I still believe Denver pulls this one out.

On a physiological basis, it is quite tough to play in high altitudes. The Broncos have a true homefield advantage in this game, as they are 22-4 SU in their last 26 home games; in the playoffs, the point-spread doesn't entirely matter too much: as a favorite you'll either cover or lose the game SU.

On to the defensive stats for both teams, we see the Broncos clearly being the better defensive team in this matchup, and though New England has proven themselves to be the late surging team this past couple of weeks, one really needs to look at their opposition and who they actually defeated: Miami twice, NY Jets twice, Jacksonville and Tampa Bay (both were New England home games), New Orleans, and Buffalo. In fact, their only "true" loss (not including Week 17), came to the KC Chiefs.

Another glaring fact is that close to 90% of the public is hammering the NE ML, a fact that is quite alarming. Do you really think Vegas intentionally set this line at +3, +150 on the ML and not realize that people would be jumping all over the Patriots? Denver on the other hand has been the best ATS team thus far this NFL season. They have been entirely undervalued and under-appreciated. They boast a great rushing offense, and complement that with a great rushing/passing defense. Playing at mile-high stadium is like playing in Foxsborough in –20 F, visiting teams just do not win and cover.

Football Football Moments Great And Not So

The game of football has had so many great and not so great moments that it would take a month of Sundays to list even a fraction of them. So we're not even going to try here. And in case you're wondering, we're not even going to list the best of the best, since that would be a matter of opinion anyway. No, we're just going to present some classic and tragic moments in the game that, hopefully, will bring back a memory or two.

Probably one of the biggest disasters in football history was November 17, 1968, when the New York Jets were playing the Oakland Raiders. The Jets were leading 32-29 when the game went to commercial. It never came back on the air. Why? Because there was a scheduled movie by the name of Heidi that was to air next. So the network broke away from the game and showed the movie. Jet fans figured the Jets had won. Not quite. The Raiders scored, not once, but twice and won the game 43-32. Since that time, networks never broke into a game again because of public outrage. This game went down in history as "The Heidi Game".

An even more tragic moment in Football history, very recent in fact, was on June 23, 2004. On this day, Pat Tillman, who was a defensive back for the Arizona Cardinals, a man who gave up a multi million dollar contract playing football to join the military, was killed on this date in Afghanistan. Tillman was a testament to the integrity of the man himself. He will always be remembered more for the sacrifice he made off the field than for his play on it.

But not all football moments were bad. There were quite a few good ones as well. For example, on December 14, 2003, a New York Jets running back by the name of Curtis Martin racked up 174 yards running in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He became only the second player in NFL history to gain 1,000 yards in his first 9 seasons. It may not seem like much, but it was quite a feat.

If you're a big New York Giants fan, there was probably no more tense a moment than in Super Bowl XXV. The Giants were leading 20-19 in the game against the Bills. It was the last seconds of the game. The Bills were setting up to kick what should have been the game winning field goal from 47 yards out. Not a sure thing but certainly makable. Well, the kick went wide right and the Giants hung on for the victory. It was one of the most nail biting finishes in NFL Super Bowl history.

And the list of moments goes on forever. Something about the game of football, especially with time being such a big factor, that makes the game so tense. The last minute drives, the last second field goal attempts, they're all such a big part of what makes this game so much fun to watch and so nerve wracking in the process.

Dallas Cowboys Off season Grades

With the off-season festivities coming to a conclusion after the draft, it is time to look back at the myriad of moves made by the Cowboys this off-season. I will start with free agency. To the right of the grade is the contract length and dollar amount and years.

WR - Terrell Owens - C+ 3/25

This is a boom or bust signing. With TO, we will have one of the most potent offenses in the league. There is also a chance that he could destroy our team chemistry and ruin our season. I don't believe this will happen, in the first year anyway.

ILB - Akin Ayodele - B+ 5/17

Ayodele appears to be the perfect player to replace Nguyen. He is a big, physical LB who excels at stuffing the run. He is young, and still has some upside but he is somewhat of a question mark considering Jacksonville really didn't even want him back.

OT - Jason Fabini - A 3/7.5

This was a great move. We brought in a good veteran tackle for a bargain. He will help add stability to our offense line.

OG - Kyle Kosier - B 5/15

The Cowboys obviously believe that Kyle is on the verge of a breakout season. But he really hasn't been anything special up to this point. I like his signing, but I question if he will really be an upgrade over Larry Allen.

TE - Ryan Hannam - B- 3/5

We needed another blocking TE, and he should feel that role nicely. He is stilllargely a developing player though so Dallas is hoping he improves over his performance in Seattle.

LB - Rocky Boiman - B 3/5

Boiman is a great special teams player who provides solid depth at LB. He better be as good as people say he is on coverage units to be worth the money.

K - Mike Vanderjagt - B 3/5.5

We definitely need a kicker, but I would have preferred one that could kick-off and wasn't such a jerk.

FS - Marcus Coleman - A 1/.8

I'm not sure if he has anything left, but if he does we got a heck of a steal. Can't really complain when we is only making about eight hundred thousand.

I disagreed with some of the picks in the draft, but you can't get upset just because they didn't select "your" guys. I really liked what we did on the second day. We got some great value. They only spot I regret not filling holes at was offensive line, but you can only fill so many holes.

OLB Bobby Carpenter - A

This was a great pick. He is the perfect fit for our defense. They only thing that could have made this pick better is if we could have traded back a couple of spots and still got him.

TE Anthony Fasano - B

This pick is definitely growing on me. We did need another TE since we are making the switch to a 2 TE offense. Fasano is a blue-collar player who will come in and contribute immediately.

DE Jason Hatcher - C

I'm not a big fan of this pick, but I see why it was made. Hatcher has freakishathletic ability for a guy his size and could really be a steal. That being said, DE was already one of our deepest positions, and I believe we have two long-term starters already here in Canty and Spears.

WR/KR Skyler Green - B-

I like Green, but this might have been a little high for him. He is a great punt retuer, but never did much as a receiver.

FS Pat Watkins - A

I love the Watkins pick. He was a good player at Florida St., and he really haslots of potential. Don't be too surprised if he is our starting free safety.

NT Montavious Stanley - A+

The best pick of our draft. He is taylor made for the nose tackle position. Not only does he provide much needed depth, but he has great potential as well. I don't see how he made it to the 6th Round as good as we has in college.

G/T Pat McQuistian - B

Pat is a huge sleeper who will have a hard time making the team without an injury. He is a big, strong and fairly athletic lineman, but he is as raw as you can get. Practice squad guy.

OL EJ Whitley - A

I really like this pick. Whitley was a consistent part of the Texas Tech offensive line for three years. He has starting experience at every O-line position, but he is probably best suited to play center and guard. I will be rooting for him to make the team, because if we have another center on our roster then we will be more likely to use Gurode as a starting guard if one of the starters falters. Otherwise, Parcells will be hesistant to do so since he would only have one other center on the roster.

Overall, I would give our off-season grade a B+. Cutting Allen and Glover hurt a little, but you can't complain to much with all the moves we made. Bill and Jerry definitely get an A for effort because they no doubt tried to improve this team. I would give free agency a solid A-, because we signed quality guys with some upside while avoiding the huge contracts that can haunt you. I will give the draft a B with room for improvement if Hatcher pans out.

Heisman Trophy Top 10 November 14

Texas may be No. 2 two in all the polls as well as being No.2 in the BCS standings but it seems as if its QB, Vince Young, is 'stealing' the hearts of many Heisman experts. I think there is little argument the Reggie Bush's candidacy has lost a lot of momentum since the Notre Dame game plus I get the feeling that too many people are taking for granted the incredible accomplishments of Matt Leinart. Add it all up and Young looks like the favorite. Behind the "Big Three", Brady Quinn of Notre Dame and Drew Olson of UCLA are having Heisman-worthy seasons but unfortunately for both of them, its a case of wrong time, wrong place (season). My latest Heisman update follows.

1) MATT LEINART (USC) Last Week: 1. I'm not ready to drop Leinart from the top spot just yet, although I admit Young is making a very significant challenge. However, Leinart is playing this season under an incredible 'microscope' and with tremendous pressure. He tued down countless millions to stay at USC for an opportunity to lead the school to an unprecedented third straight national title. So far, he's done everything one could ask, and MORE! USC won at Berkeley this past Saturday, beating Cal 35-10. Of course everyone knows it was the Cal Bears who last beat the Trojans, 34-31 in triple-OT (back in 2003). However, USC had little trouble this time around, as Leinart ran for two second-quarter scores, giving USC a 21-3 halftime lead. Leinart didn't have a great game, failing to throw a TD pass for the third time this year and just the fourth time in his career. He finished the game 20-of-32 for 246 yards with one interception and those two rushing TDs (five on the year). He's now led USC to 32 straight wins (tied for the 6th-best streak of all-time) and a record-tying 22 straight Pac-10 wins. He's 35-1 as starter, tossing a Pac-10 record 94 career TD passes (just 22 INTs), while topping 300 yards passing in six games this year. In comparison, he had just five 300-yard games in his first two seasons at USC and Vince Young has just ONE 300-yard game in his entire career! I'll leave further comparisons for future use (if needed). Leinart has two big games left, both versus quality opponents. USC hosts No. 16 Fresno State this Saturday and then No. 12 UCLA on December 3. His season stats are: 211-of-318 3017 yards 66.4 23 TDs 7 INTs / 5 rush TDs.

2) VINCE YOUNG (Texas) Last Week: 3. Young has passed Bush in my poll and I'm getting the strong impression that he's the current favorite. Texas beat Kansas just 27-23 last year, in a game which featured some heavy controversy regarding the officiating. The Longhos left little in the hands of the officials this past Saturday, running up a 52-0 halftime lead. Young misfired on his first three passes but then completed his next eight, including TD throws of 45, 64 and 29 yards. He added a fourth TD pass before the half, giving him a career-high in TD passes for a game and was on the bench with five minutes remaining in the third quarter of a 66-14 Texas win. Young finished 19-of-27 for 281 yards and didn't throw an interception. Only a head-scratching six rushing attempts for minus four yards, kept him from topping 300 yards in total offense for the FIFTH time in his last seven games. After opening the season by averaging 181.3 YPG passing with five TD passes, four interceptions and one rushing TD in his first three games, Young has averaged 267.2 YPG passing while throwing for 17 TDs (just four INTs) and running for seven more over his last seven games. In that stretch, he's averaged 348.9 YPG in total offense. He passed Major Applewhite on Saturday and is now the school-leader in total offense with 8,269 career yards. He's led Texas to 17 straight wins and is 27-2 in his career as a starter. Texas plays Texas A&M on November 25 and then will play in the Big-12 title game on December 3. His season stats are: 155-of-244 63.5 2414 yards 22 TDs 8 INTs / 117 carries 774 yards 6.6 YPC 8 TDs.

3) REGGIE BUSH (USC) Last Week: 2. I can't imagine that even Bush's most ardent supporters don't feel as if the Heisman is slipping from Reggie's grasp. Bush was a spectacular but complimentary play last year when he finished fifth in the voting. However, he was given a bigger role this year and after opening with an 86-yard effort versus Hawaii, ripped off FIVE consecutive 100-yard games (had just two in his career entering this year), peaking with a 160-yard three-TD effort (not to mention his all-important "push") in USC's thrilling 34-31 win at Notre Dame. Bush has failed to top 100 yards in three of his four games since (scoring just two TDs) and often has been overshadowed in the backfield by teammate LenDale White (three TDs in Saturday's win over Cal). When all the votes are in, both Leinart and Bush may suffer from the fact that there is so much talent around them and unlike last year, may actually take votes away from each other. While Bush remains the nation's most SPECTACULAR player (ranks third with 182.5 YPG in all-purpose yards), his opportunities have been limited recently and unlike last year when he made major contributions with his pass-catching abilities (seven TD catches), he's gone seven games without a TD catch and has just two for the entire season. His season stats are: 140 carries 1104 yards 7.9 YPC 11 TDs / 28 catches 315 yards 11.3 YPC 2 TDs.

4) BRADY QUINN (Notre Dame) Last Week: 4. Quinn continues to be a record-breaking 'machine' this year for Notre Dame. In two years under Willingham, Brady completed just over 50 percent of his passes (50.8), throwing 26 TDs and 25 interceptions. However, under the tutelage of Charlie Weis, Quinn has spent the season re-writing the Notre Dame record book. His latest onslaught came in Notre Dame's all-time NCAA record 42nd straight win over Navy, 42-21. Quinn finished 22-of-31 for 284 yards with four TDs and one interception. That fourth-quarter interception ended a stretch of 130 consecutive passes without a 'pick', setting a another Notre Dame record. He extended to 14, his school record of consecutive games with least one TD pass and by game's end, had passed Ron Powlus as the school's career-leader with 53 TD passes (Powlus had 52). He topped 250 yards passing for the 14th time in his career (extending another record) and now owns the school's single-season record with 2,931 passing yards. Quinn is now just 254 yards shy of passing Powlus as the school's all-time leader in passing yards. His season stats are 217-of-330 65.8 2931 yards 27 TDs 5 INTs / 1 rush TD

5) DREW OLSON (UCLA) Last Week: 5. Bruin fans will argue that Olson is having the best year of any QB in the city! They may just be right. Olson had three TD passes and 295 yards passing by the end of the FIRST quarter, in UCLA's 45-35 win over Arizona State this past Saturday. He opened the game with a 91-yard TD pass on the game's first play from scrimmage and never looked back. He finished the game 22-of-27 for a career-high 510 yards with five TDs and no interceptions. He missed by just FOUR yards, of setting a single-game school record for passing yards (Cade McNown threw for 513 yards in UCLA's infamous 49-45 loss at Miami in 1998). His 30 TD passes this year (just three INTs!), easily breaks McNown's single-season record of 25, set in that 1998 season. Olson was the main QB at UCLA for the last two years when the Bruins went 12-13. Similar to Quinn, Olson entered this year without much fanfare (32 TDs and 25 INTs in his three-year career) but has been BRILLIANT! Olson's 172.5 QB rating ranks him FIRST in the nation. By the way, Young is second, Leinart fourth and Quinn fifth. Olson will have to wait until December 3 but he will get his showdown with Los Angeles' "other" QB. His season stats are: 218-of-322 67.7 2909 yards 30 TDs 3 INTs.

Typically, I list five other players six-through 10 but it hardly seems worth it. Last week's sixth-ranked player (Cody Hodges of Texas Tech), saw his team lose to Oklahoma State, a team that entered the game winless in Big-12 play. No. 7 Maurice Drew of UCLA has fallen so far behind teammate Drew Olson, it's not worth arguing. My No. 8 guy last week, DeAngelo Williams of Memphis, missed last week's game versus Tennessee because of injury and the Tigers fell to 4-5 with a 20-16 loss. Laurence Maroney of Minnesota was ranked No. 9 and like Williams, missed the Gophers' game with an injury but Minnesota hardly missed him, beating Michigan State 41-18. As for Washington State's Jerome Harrison (No.10), he ran for 143 yards and has now run for more than 100 yards in all 10 games this year, as well as topping 100 yards in 13 straight games, setting a new Pac-10 record. That being said, his team has lost SEVEN straight games!

The Life Of David Beckham

In this article I write about the England and Real Madrid footballer David Beckham. Beckham no doubt is looking forward to leading England at the forthcoming Fifa World Cup of football and victory would provide that final acolade to what has been a very successful career.

David Beckham was bo around the London area of England and as a child soon developed a passion for playing football. His dad would take him to the local park to practice his skills including how to trap and control a ball. He would at times kick it up in the air as high as he could and would then ask David to attempt to control it as it came back down towards the ground. Young Beckham would also practice the art of scoring a goal from the other half of the pitch. This is a particular skill which is very hard to perfect. Years later when he played a famous game at Wimbledon, he scored such a goal which highlighted his talent and put him on the football map.

Beckham was soon spotted as a youngster by a variety of clubs but decided to join Manchester United. He still remains a staunch United supporter despite moving to play for Madrid and admits that he is still hurt by the way Alex Ferguson hounded him out of the club. David always believed that he would end his career at Manchester but this was not to be. He is now very happy at Real Madrid and the supporters have really taken to him. Despite a lack of silverware at his new club, Beckham has kept his form and has been one of the most consistent performers in the team.

David Beckhams inteational career for England has been some what of a mixed bag. No England supporter will ever forget the moment when he was sent off against our great rivals Argentina, eight years ago at the World Cup. It was a moment of madness which I am sure he will regard as his biggest mistake in football. The way many people in England reacted to this error was far too over the top and totally out of order. A lesser man may have even quit the game under the huge amount of pressure and the constant abuse from supporters up and down the country.

This however is not Beckhams style and he came back fighting. His performance in the last group qualifying game against Greece was nothing short of sensational and the free kick he scored in the final moments was one of the best I have ever seen. In the World Cup itself four years ago, England again were drawn to play Argentina. During the match they were awarded a penalty which David stepped up to take. My heart was in my mouth and I was willing the ball in for him and our proud nation. The pressure he must of felt would have been immense but he kept his cool and slotted the ball into the back of the net.

I really hope that Beckham can captain England to go all the way to win the 2006 Fifa World Cup as in my opinion he truly deserves it.

The Beautifull Game Called Football

The football equivalent of the Oscars swept into London on Tuesday as the first ever FIFpro awards were announced in front of renowned stars from the worlds of sport, music, screen and even our very own Marc Duffy (but the legality of how the ticket was gain is still under suspicion!)

Over 38,000 players from 40 countries representing FIFpro were involved in voting, with 55 players short listed in the end. After a night of great entertainment, including awards for Ronaldinho (world player of year), Wayne Rooney (young player of the year) and Cristiano Ronaldo (young player of the year as voted by fans) the World XI was announced as:

GK: NELSON DIDA (Brazil/AC Milan

DF: CAFU (Brazil/AC Milan

DF: ALESSANDRO NESTA (Italy/AC Milan

DF: JOHN TERRY (England/Chelsea)

DF: PAOLO MALDINI (Italy/AC Milan

MF: RONALDINHO (Brazil/Barcelona

MF: FRANK LAMPARD (England/Chelsea)

MF: CLAUDE MAKELELE (France/Chelsea)

MF: ZINEDINE ZIDANE (France/Chelsea

FC: SAMUEL ETO'O (Cameroon/Barcelona)

FC: ANDREI SHEVCHENKO (Ukraine/AC Milan

But really do we care about the 'official' team? A team that has that has 5 players over 30, with a combined age of 168? A team with a certain Zinedine Zidane, who in truth, had an ordinary season for Real Madrid? Of course we don't because there's only one 'official' team that matters and that's the Bootroom XI, voted by you, the SI public. So without further ado in association with Sports Interactive The Bootroom proudly presents YOUR World XI.

Note: The players in each position have been listed in ascending order i.e. Terry was the most voted for defender

GK- PETR CECH (Czech Republic/Chelsea): The best goalie in the Premiership, if not the world. In his first season in England not only did he pick up his first championship medal, Cech also set a run of 1024 minutes without conceding a goal, a new English top flight record. Fewest goals conceded and most clean sheets last season not only won him the Barclays Golden Gloves for '04/'05 but also the number one shirt in you World XI.

DF- JOHN TERRY (England/Chelsea): José Mourinho has dubbed him 'the best centre-back in the world' and who could argue? After lifting both the League Cup and Premiership title, world class display at the back saw Terry also Voted Player of the Year by his fellow professionals. England's defeat to Northe Ireland just proved how much the England defense missed Terry's leadership and organization, adding more claim that he is the best centre-back in the world.

DF- CARLES PUYOL SAFORCADA (Spain/Barcelona): On the 2nd October 1999 Puyol made his first team debut, and ever since then has made the right side of defense his own. A player that always gives his all, this season has seen Puyol linked to a move to the Premiership with both Manchester United and Arsenal the leading candidates. Only 27, Puyol is entering his prime which could see him, one day lead both club and country.

DF- ALESSANDRO NESTA (Italy/AC Milan): One of the five players that appears in both the FIFpro and The Bootroom World XI. Capped over 60 times for his country Nesta is a typical Italian defender, hard to get pass and comfortable on the ball. In his first season with AC Milan he won the Coppa Italia, Champions League and European Super Cup and was very unlucky to collect a runners up medal in the defeat to Liverpool

DF- GABRIEL HEINZE (Argentina/Manchester United): A £6.9 million signing from PSG, Heinze won over both fans and pundits with his tough tackling and 100% commitment to the task. Picking up the Fans player of the year for United a nasty injury against Villarreal, sees the left-back out for the rest of the season, a massive blow for Alex Ferguson's team.

MF- RONALDINHO (Brazil/Barcelona): The third player to be voted in both the FIFpro and Bootroom World XI. What can you say about Ronaldo de Assis Moreira that hasn't been said? A 27 million Euro signing from PSG, the little Brazilian has tricked his way through the best defenses in La Liga and on the Inteational stage. Ronaldinho can sit his FIFpro world player of the year award next to his FIFA world player of the year award and his La Liga Championship medal, both won last year.

MF- STEVEN GERRARD (England/Liverpool): Gerrard help lift Liverpool's fifth European Cup with an inspirational performance in Istanbul last season and that's why he's been picked in your World XI. With nearly 300 games under his belt for Liverpool Gerrard has lifted the League cup (twice), FA Cup and UEFA Cup in his seven years in the first team. A driving force for Liverpool, when Gerrard is on top of his game he is quite unstoppable.

MF- FRANK LAMPARD (England/Chelsea): The fourth player that appears in both the FIFpro and Bootroom World XI. Winning Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association, Barclay's player of the year and Player of the Year by fans on the PFA website just shows what kind of season Frank Lampard Jnr had. A £11 million signing from West Ham, a lot of fans and pundits were bemused as why Chelsea were fork out so much for an over-weight and over-rated player. But four years on Lampard has become an established part of the team scoring important goals from midfield.

MF- KAKA (Brazil/Ac Milan): The 23 year old really shined this season with a brilliant first half performance against Liverpool in the Champion's League Final. Signing from São Paulo FC in 2003, Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite scored 10 goals in 30 appearances winning the Italian Serie A Championship and the European Super Cup in his first season. Kaka's best position is just behind the striker where his killer passing and arriving late in the box has quickly become his trademark.

FC- ADRIANO (Brazil/Inter Milan): A must signing for all players of Football Manager, Adriano Leite Ribeiro showed what a class striker he is with an impressive 15 goals in 16 appearances last season. A powerful and very skillful striker who seems to have been around for ages, Adriano is still only 23 and has an incredible future in front of him

FC- ANDREI SHEVCHENKO: (Ukraine/AC Milan): The last player to be picked in both the FIFpro and Bootroom World XI. Signing for $26 million from Dynamo Kyiv, Shevchenko will go down as one of the best strikers to grace Serie A. In December 2004, Shevchenko was named European Footballer of the Year after scoring the winning penalty against Juventus in the Champions League final in 2003. Shevchenko can score goals with both feet, is graced with great close control and pace that often leaves defenders for dead.

Football Special Teams

If you're a big football fan, probably one of the most frustrating things you can watch in a game is when two teams are going at it, head to head, evenly matched, no score, both defenses doing their job and then suddenly a kick off is retued 100 yards for a touchdown because a guy on special teams missed an easy tackle. The game is lost because of somebody who is on the field maybe a total of 2 minutes in a 60 minute contest. It's enough to make you pull your hair out of your head.

The truth is, special teams don't get the recognition they deserve. They aren't glamorous like a high powered offense with a star quarterback like a John Elway. They aren't in the spotlight like a famous defense led by somebody like Lawrence Taylor who was probably one of the greatest middle linebackers to ever play the game, with all his drug problems. No, special teams don't get all the glory like the other guys do, but they sure get all the blame when a kick off is retued for a touchdown, or they fumble on their own kickoff retu. Special teams are under such a microscope that their coaches often lose their jobs because of big blunders on the field.

Special teams have a lot of duties to perform. They retu kick offs and punts and on the other end of the spectrum, they kick off after they score and punt the ball when they don't. So many kickers have had careers ruined because of a missed field goal attempt or a blocked punt. Just recently in the playoffs a kicker missed 3 easy field goals that would have given his team the victory. Instead they went down to a bitter defeat.

Everybody has their theories as to why special teams are sometimes so dreadfully awful. One theory is that enough attention isn't given to them during training and practices. Another theory is that they just don't get enough playing time during a game and therefor don't have enough time to really get their heads and bodies into the game. Still another theory is that these guys really aren't that good. That's why they're on special teams. If they were better players they'd be on the starting offense or defense.

The truth, if there is a truth to this problem, is that it's probably a combination of all three things. Let's face it, the offense and defense is what drives each team so much more time has to be given to them. Plus, since special teams aren't on the field as much, you wouldn't give as much attention to them. As for their heads being in the game, there is no denying that these guys don't get to play as much. It's kind of like a pinch hitter coming off the bench in baseball. It's not an easy thing to do. And as far as special teams players not being the best on the field, while it is true that some players double on offense and special teams, this is the exception and not the rule. Sadly, your special teams players are not your top players.

Whatever the reason, there is no denying that many a game is lost because of special teams play. But isn't it great to watch when a special teams player wins a game for you?

Tips on Choosing the Best Pro Football Pick

When it comes to picking pro football games, there are a number of factors that can affect your success. Last minute injuries to key players, weather, and even an odd bounce of the ball can mean the difference between a win and a loss for both the football team and for you. So how do you make the right picks? There is no real answer; in fact it is called gambling for a reason. There are, though, some tips you should consider. So, to that end, here are some tips on choosing the best pro football pick.

Pick Early

One of the best tips on choosing the best pro football picks you can get is to pick early. When the lines first come out on the game, that is the time you will likely get the most favorable spread. As the week goes on, bets are placed, and things happen, the spread can change dramatically, which can make it much more difficult for you to decide. When you make the picks early in the week you can get on the bet when the line is fresh and before betting has driven it one way or another. This is probably the most common of the many tips on choosing the best pro football picks you will hear.

Go With Your Gut

Another one of the best tips on choosing the best pro football picks you will get is to go with your guy. One of the biggest mistakes that amateur football gamblers will make is to over-think or overanalyze the games. You likely do not have inside information or access to the teams, so beyond what you already know about the game and the teams, there is not much you will lea that will allow you to "cheat" the line. Even pro gamblers fail often, so overanalyzing the games will not help you any more than going with your gut will. See the line, think about the game, decide how you feel about it, and make your picks. It sounds simple, but it is going to serve you better than studying the game deeply.

Pick A Game On Its Own

One of the best, but least heard tips on choosing the best pro football picks is to pick each game on its own. What does that mean? Instead of hedging your bets by picking one game one way because of how you chose another one, you should pick each game in a vacuum, so to speak. Make your picks and stick with them. Hedging can eventually cause you to lose two games when you might have only lost one otherwise. Keep that in mind and you will actually minimize your losses more than when you try to hedge out.

There are many pro tips on choosing the best pro football picks out there, but these are a few to get you started. Remember, pick early on the first line, go with what your gut tells you, don't over-think the game, and pick each game on its own merit. Do those things and you will be on your way to responsible picking of pro games.

The Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have their hometown in Kansas City, Kansas. Many a fan has happily purchased one of the over 79,000 seats at Arrowhead Stadium to watch their favorite team play. Members of the AFC west, the Kansas City Chiefs were founded by Lamar Hunt. The current president of the NFL team is Carl Peterson, and the head coach is Herman Edwards. In their history as a team, the Kansas City Chiefs have been to the playoffs 14 times in their career, but have never made it to the Super Bowl. Yet they do have a lot to make their fans proud and a future ahead of them that has not been written yet. Fans in Kansas and around the country are not ready to give up hope for their favorite team, and wear their Kansas City Chiefs jerseys as proof of their commitment as fans.

Many fans were sad to see that Dick Vermeil has left the Kansas City Chiefs as coach. His five seasons as coach are over, and it was hard for him to say goodbye, yet he felt it was time to pursue other things in his life. It is now up to head coach, Herman Edwards to see what next year's season will be like. It will be interesting to see where he can take the Kansas City Chiefs. There are bound to be some changes both in the team roster and in the way the team is coached in the coming months. Fans will be watching closely and hoping that this year is the one that the Kansas City Chiefs will make it to the Super Bowl.

In addition to playing football, both the players and the Kansa City Chiefs organization put forth a lot of effort for charitable events and causes. For instance, this past season, the Kansas City Chiefs raised over fourteen million dollars for various charities. It is interesting to note that many of the players take their own time to support and help charities of their own choices, as well.

Of course, fans all over Kansas are anxious to display their support for their team, and proudly wear the red and white colors of the Kansas City Chiefs. The online Pro Shop even sells a Kansas City Chiefs cookbook that is said to contain some very good recipes for fans to try.

Kansas City Chief fans will be cheering them on all the way. Go Chiefs!

Football The Oakland Raiders

One of the most colorful franchises in all of professional football is without a doubt the Oakland Raiders. Based out of Oakland, CA, the Raiders are yet another original AFL member that came into the NFL during the merger in 1970. As a member of the AFC West, the Raiders have been to 5 Super Bowls, winning 3 of them. Let's take a closer look at the history of the Oakland Raiders.

Al Davis has owned the Raiders since 1972. Originally founded in Oakland, the team played there until Davis moved them to Los Angeles in 1982. Later, the team moved back to Oakland in 1995 and remains there to this day.

The football team has had the colors of silver and black since Davis was general manager of the team in 1963. He used these colors originally because all TV's were available in black and white only and these colors showed up better than others.

John Madden became the head coach of the Raiders in 1969. He later guided the team to its first ever Super Bowl win in 1976. Madden stayed on as coach of the football team until 1979 when he left the team and the league, to go into TV broadcasting.

In 1982, Davis moved the team to Los Angeles, due in part to the refusal of the city of Oakland to remodel the football stadium. In their first year in Los Angeles, the team went to the Super Bowl and won. That has been the last time the Raiders have won a Super Bowl. In 1995, the team moved back to the city of Oakland.

The fans of the Oakland Raiders are some of the rowdiest fans in all of professional football. They arrive early for tailgate parties dressed in silver and black paint, masks and costumes. One of the more rowdy spots in the stadium is known as the "black hole". This part of the stadium is definitely not for the feint of heart.

Hall of Fame

The Oakland Raiders have 18 current members in the pro football Hall of Fame. They include: Marcus Allen Fred Biletnikoff George Blanda Bob Brown Willie Brown Dave Casper Al Davis Eric Dickerson Mike Haynes Ted Hendricks James Lofton Howie Long Ronnie Lott John Madden Ron Mix Jim Otto Art Shell Gene Upshaw

There have been many other notable players on the Raiders over the years including: Ray Guy Lyle Alzado Cliff Branch Bo Jackson Carl Weathers (later played Apollo Creed in "Rocky" movies) Jack Tatum Jerry Rice

The Raiders have been known as a franchise that has had more than its share of bad football drafts over the years. This, combined with the constant head coaching changes by Al Davis, has made winning sometimes difficult over the years. One of the more memorable draft day mistakes was the selection of troubled QB Todd Marinovich.

The Oakland Raiders have some of the storied rivalries among any NFL football team, with the fiercest being San Diego, Denver and Kansas City. Even when the Raiders are not as competitive, teams do not like playing them. That is one reason why the team will always remain as one of the more popular ones in the league.

Football The Denver Broncos

Located in the mile high city of Denver, CO, the Denver Broncos are one of the NFL's most successful football franchises. They began play in 1960 as an original member of the old AFL and became part of the NFL when the two leagues merged. This storied football team is a member of the AFC Weste Division and has been a part of 6 Super Bowls during this time, winning 2 of them. Let's take a brief look at the history of the Denver Broncos football team.

Success wasn't always with the Broncos. During their first 13 years, the team never had a winning record. Then beginning in the late 70s this football team began a run of Super Bowl appearances. Although their first 4 Super Bowls resulted in lopsided defeats, they were able to win back-to-back Super Bowls in 1997 and 98. The team continues to this day to be among the NFL's elite.

Playing their football games in Mile High Stadium, the team had a distinct home field advantage. Mile High Stadium was the loudest stadium in all of football with good reason. The flooring was made of steel instead of concrete. The sound was deafening to opposing players and coaches. And with their nicknamed "Orange Crush" defense, it's little wonder why this team was so dominant. Mile High Stadium lasted from 1960 until 2000 and was then replaced by the new Invesco Field at Mile High.

Although Denver had begin to experience a little success in the late 70s, it wasn't until 1983 when they truly became a powerful organization with the arrival of the great John Elway at quarterback. Under his leadership the team went on to 5 Super Bowls. As talented as John Elway was in football, he was also drafted at the same time by the New York Yankees to play baseball. John made the decision to stick with football and the rest is history.

Hall of Fame

The Broncos have only 3 football Hall of Fame players. The first one was Willie Brown, who played with the team from 1963-66 at CB. Next is Tony Dorsett, who played his only season with the team in 1988. Finally, there is John Elway, who played from 1983-1998.

Other very good football players for the Broncos over the years include: Gene Mingo (the first African-American kicker in the NFL in 1960) Floyd Little Lionel Taylor Rich Jackson Charley Johnson Frank Tripucka Paul Smith Billy Thompson Craig Morton Jim Tuer Haven Moses Tom Jackson Randy Gradishar Louis Wright Dennis Smith Steve Atwater Karl Mecklenburg Gary Zimmerman Terrell Davis Shannon Sharpe Jason Elam

Mike Shanahan, who has also guided the team to their 2 Super Bowl wins, coaches the Broncos. The Denver football team is also known for their prolific running backs, including two who surpassed the 1,000 yard mark in the same season.

With another strong draft in 2006, the Denver Broncos should continue to experience success in the NFL for years to come. Cheered on by a fan base that is among the most loyal in all of football, this team has come to expect this success, year after year.

The 13 Hour Superbowl

Well, we've managed to get through another Superbowl game. With all of the hype it is almost shocking a game is actually played. The Steelers took this Superbowl and go home happy. For the rest of us, well, it is simply the end of the football season.

The Superbowl has now become a soap opera. The incredible hype to this game is truly comical. The "pre-game" shows now come on before other pre-game shows. The "fun" on the day of the game starts around nine in the moing with discussions about the game and old films from previous games. This works its way right up into about six-thirty PM!! Talk about needing to take your vitamins for stamina.

Perhaps it is just age but it appears these games are getting more and more boring. If there were not so much gambling, drinking and eating involved, a good movie could compete against it. Let's face it: The Superbowl has become St. Patrick's Day and New Year's rapped up in to one. Many people will skip work the following day due to progressive hangovers or bad digestive systems after the buffalo wings, beer and pizza. Many reports have shown lost worker productivity the following day of the game. I miss the "good ole days" when there were one or two hours of pre-game hype and then the game would just start. Do we really need players from every other generation walking onto the field as the names are read off like a school list before the game? Do we really need rock concerts at half-time? At this point a dog going after a frisbee for fifteen minutes looks better.

Of course, the National Football League dabbles with racial issues as well which are cumbersome to say the least. A commemoration for Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King, is understandable. But was showing Rosa Parks, a woman who passed on three and a half months ago, really necessary outside of racial pandering? The NFL should not be in this business at all. In the end it is still a league based on guys throwing or running with a ball and hitting each other; not taking on racial issues.

In a couple of months most people will be hard pressed to even remember who played in this Superbowl. Hell, if it were not for the beer and good food, a good book is sounding like a better option more and more.

Fantasy Football Information Fans May Have New Star

Fantasy Football Fans will want to remember the name Deion Branch. When preparing for your fantasy football drafts this summer, don't let the New England receiver slip too far in your ratings or in your round-by-round projections.

He is a star in the making.

Branch's 35 catches and four touchdowns in 2004 may make him barely visible on many people's radar screens. Others may look for him to slip into the lower rounds, because of these modest numbers. Don't make this mistake.

Only the most astute talent evaluators will remember that Branch missed seven games. Even they, however, will remember his stellar performance in the Super Bowl, which eaed him MVP honors. He tied a Super Bowl record with 11 catches for 133 yards. More impressive were his circus-style catches.

Branch is small but quick, as evidenced by his 13-yard-per-catch career average. This was just his third year in the league, and he is certainly a star on the rise.

If you have 12-16 teams in your league, look to nab Branch in the seventh or eighth round. He will be a steal here, but if you wait longer, you may let an amazing sleeper get away. Branch is just the type of player that the men in my novel, The League, look to steal in their drafts.

Of course, he's also the type of player a madman trying to win $30 million looks to eliminate. Lea more about this intriguing novel at http://www.sportsnovels.com.

Football The Offense

The game of football features two teams going at each other. One team is on offense and the other team is on defense. We're going to concentrate on the offensive players in this article and the role of each man.

The offense of a team is the key to scoring points. Without a well tuned offense a team doesn't have a chance. That's why each man in the offensive unit has to know his role and execute it to the best of his ability. This involves not only skill but also thinking on his feet. Football is a very technical game in many respects and if a player doesn't have all the plays stuck up in his head, he's not going to know how to react when a certain play is called.

The offense itself is actually run by the coach who calls the plays, even though he's not on the field with his players. But on the field, the game is run by the quarterback. This is probably the most important position in the game of football. A good quarterback can mean the difference between winning and losing, especially in the final minutes. He's the one who hands the ball off to the running backs on a run play or passes it to the receivers on a pass play. Everything falls on his shoulders.

The running backs, which are the halfbacks and fullbacks, are the ones who run the ball on run plays and help give protection to the quarterback on pass plays. They can also act as receivers on pass plays as well. Running backs need to be very quick on their feet. They also need to be strong in order to block for the quarterback. Running backs are probably some of the best athletes on the field.

The wide receivers and the tight ends are the ones who catch the passes thrown by the quarterback. There are a number of routes that these players need to run during the course of a game and each route has to be known beforehand. The routes themselves can be very complicated in an attempt to throw off the defense. Receivers have to be very fast in order to outrun the defense. They also need to have very good hands to catch a football.

The linemen, called guards and tackles, are there for two purposes. On pass plays they are there to provide pass protection for the quarterback so he can have enough time to get his pass off. On run plays they are on the line to create holes for the running backs to run through. In order to do both of these jobs linemen have to be very strong and very big. Some linemen are well over 350 pounds. When these guys hit you, you know you've been hit.

Rounding out the offense is the kicker. He is the one who either kicks the extra point after a touchdown is scored or tries for a field goal if the team is close enough to the goal line but not close enough to go for a touchdown. A kicker has to have very strong legs, as some of the kicks he has to try are from quite a few yards away.

For an offense to be effective, all the men on it have to work together. That's what makes some offenses great and others not so great. It's called teamwork.

Teach Your Football Wide Receivers to Get Open and Score Points In Bunches

Your passing game starts with the ability of your football wide receivers to get separation from their defenders. It doesn't matter if you have the greatest quarterback in the world if his receivers can't give him a window to throw to.

The first step is to teach your wide receivers how to get off the line. If the defenders are pressing and bumping at the line, the receiver must know how to beat the pressure. Begin by teaching fakes. The most basic is the "head bob". This is where the football wide receiver moves his head to one side while getting his body moving straight or to the other side. A good shoulder fake can spice this move up.

Since defensive backs will eventually pick up on a repeated fake, teach your receivers to mix things up with double-fakes (fake one way, then the other, then move beyond the defensive back).

Football wide receivers must also be taught how to use their hands to gain separation. Teach the "rip" and "swim" techniques. If cutting left, teach them to use the right arm to "rip" up through the coerback's arms. For the "swim" technique, teach your wide receivers to bring the inside arm up and over the coer's arms to knock the arms downward.

Once off the line, good route running is obviously an important skill to develop. One way to help your football wide receivers get open is to have them run hard to a specific spot, get control (possibly use a fake here) and make the cut. Plant the foot away from the direction of the cut, make the cut and then accelerate into the cut. Teach your players the importance of getting the defensive back moving backwards and then cutting away from them.

Besides the straight line charge, you can also have your football receivers use an S-shape weave to get open. Have them run quickly at the defensive back to get close, then "curve" around him to gain separation.

Against man-to-man coverage, leaing the art of good cuts and making those cuts at the right time will be extremely important to the success of your wide receivers. Against zone coverage, it's a bit different. Since the defensive backs are defending an area, the football receivers won't need to use their fakes quite as much since they just need to find the holes in the zone.

One often over-looked area where you can give your players an advantage is in your scouting of the opposition. Don't underestimate the importance of exploiting how your players match up to the other guys. Figure out how you can game-plan how to get your best or fastest receiver matched up against the opposition's weakest or slowest defensive back.

Teach your football wide receivers the correct fundamentals for getting open, game-plan your match ups effectively, then sit back and feel the satisfaction of watching a beautifully executed big play win the game for your players.

NCAA Approves Fifth New Bowl Game

Say it isn't so? Not another bowl game!

The NCAA on Wednesday approved a new postseason football bowl game in Houston starting next season.

It will replace the former Houston Bowl and is the fifth new game approved by the NCAA Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee since the end of last season.

The bowl, which has not yet been named, will be managed by Lone Star Sports and Entertainment, which is affiliated with the Houston Texans of the NFL.

The name of the new bowl and other details will be announced later. In April, the NCAA approved a fifth Bowl Championship Series game, which will be played in Glendale, Arizona, along with the Inteational Bowl in Toronto, the Birmingham Bowl and the New Mexico Bowl.

Bowls that were renewed for next season are: the AutoZone Liberty, Capital One, Champs Sports, Chick-Fil-A, Emerald, FedEx Orange, Gaylord Hotels Music City, GMAC, Independence, Insight, Pioneer Pure Vision Las Vegas, MasterCard Alamo, Meineke Car Care, MPC Computers, Motor City, All-state Sugar, Outback, Pacific Life Holiday, San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia, Fort Worth, Rose, AT&T Cotton, Hawaii, Tostitos Fiesta, Toyota Gator, Vitalis Sun and New Orleans.

Don't get me wrong, I love college football. I love the atmosphere, the crowds and the future NFL stars that dazzle us every Saturday. But do we really need more bowl games. There's already too many teams who don't deserve to be in one and now the NCAA has approved five new games since the end of last season.

Some will argue that it makes the game better, it's better for the fans and the schools gain money which helps in recruiting and other improvements, it helps create excitement...blah, blah, blah.

Any team that is 6-5 doesn't belong in a bowl game. Period, end of story. I don't care if they were 0-11 the previous season and the feel good story of the year, 6-5 or God help us 6-6, just doesn't cut it. Why reward mediocrity? If I was a coach and my team went 6-5, I'd be pissed!

The bowl system has been in place for a long, long time and most of the good ole' boys in the NCAA don't want to see that changed. The NCAA, along with the universities, love to count all the money that rolls in from corporate sponsors during bowl season.

The problem is that all these games are watering down college football and taking away what makes it special. To tell the truth, nobody, even the most diehard college football fan, cares about two 6-5 teams playing in a bowl game. Unless you are/were an alumnus or it's your favorite team.

Nevertheless, the NCAA will keep creating more bowl games and continue to reward mediocrity. Remember, North Texas State made it to a bowl game a few years back with a 5-6 record! Excellent.

College football is a great institution, but like all institutions it desperately needs some overhauling. Too bad it's not going to happen for a long, long time. Not while the dollars are flowing and the status quo is secure.

All I know is when the first Inteational Bowl kicks off in Toronto and the NCAA smiles as it tries to win the hearts of Canadian fans, I'll be at home, the TV tued off, with visions of a true playoff system dancing in my head.

Get Your Football Tickets Somehow Someway

As a fan of a very popular and successful professional football team, I know it can be difficult to get tickets, but what if you want to buy Detroit lion tickets? In recent history, the Detroit Lions have not been overly successful, but does that make the tickets any cheaper or easier to obtain? I suppose it depends on who sets ticket prices and how often they sell out their stadium, no matter what their record is. The more I look into it, the more I realize that the best prices on about anything can be found online, and Detroit lion tickets, or any NFL tickets for that matter, are no exception. All you need to do, then, is understand the step by step process of buying Detroit lion tickets online to get the best price possible.

The first couple of steps may seem obvious, but it is important that you are prepared when you to make your Detroit lion ticket purchase. First of all, you will need to figure out which game you want to attend. Is there a particular opponent you want to see? If not, you can just check all games and see where there is availability. Many games for a number of NFL teams are sold out before the season even begins, due to the enormous popularity of pro football. However, just in case, go online to the Detroit Lions' official website and check to see if there are tickets available for the game you want to see. If so, you are in luck, the team will be selling the tickets at face value, which is really as low as you can expect to get them for unless you are buying an enormous quantity of Detroit lion tickets.

If you are planning a season or more ahead to buy your Detroit lion tickets, you may want to join the team's waitlist of fan club. You will, then, likely get access tickets on a preferential basis. In addition, you will likely have a great shot at playoff tickets if that is something that becomes an issue during the season. Because no matter which game you want to go to, Detroit lion tickets for the playoffs sure would make for a good time.

Another option is to buy your Detroit lion tickets from a ticket broker. Brokering is illegal in some states, but rarely prosecuted. If you are conceed, however, just check with your local and state laws to make sure everything you do is on the up and up. A broker will buy up tickets to sold out events and resell them for a profit. Your Detroit Lion tickets won't be cheap going this route, but you are likely to get tickets to whatever event you would like to. If you want to bottom feed a little bit more, there are always ticket scalpers around on game day. They basically do what brokers do, only without the office. If you are the type who likes to wheel an deal and doesn't mind gambling a bit, you can certainly do all of those things if you get your Detroit Lion tickets from a ticket scalper.

Tickets for any NFL team, yes even the Detroit Lions, are difficult to get sometimes. However, if you plan out which game you want to see, getting the Detroit Lions tickets you want is not difficult. You may have to spend some money, but if you get to see the game you want, isn't it worth it?

Handicapping Football Totals

Did you see the Rams flop at home Sunday in a 38-28 loss to the Cardinals? The game sailed over the total, which is not a surprise as the Rams have the fourth-worst defense in the NFL. The Rams have a high octane offense with loads of weapons in the running and passing game, but the defense has been poor the last two years under coordinator Larry Marmie, who replaced the popular Lovie Smith. It's obvious Marmie does not possess Smith's talent for defense. 70% of the Rams games have gone over the total this season (7-3). It's those type of team strengths and weaknesses (bad defense, good offense) that handicappers look for when examining totals. The Rams are 4-1 over the total at home, too, on their slick artificial carpet.

Speaking of Lovie Smith, he's since gone on to be head coach of the Chicago Bears. He has an abundance of defensive talent, and limited offensive options along with a rookie quarterback. It's no surprise that Smith prefers to win games with his defense and play conservative offensively with a rookie QB. The Bears are 8-2 under the total this season. Think that's just a trend? Smith ran the same formula a year ago as Chicago went 10-6 under the total, meaning they are 18-8 under since he's become Bears coach!

Handicapping totals is about line value, but it's also about the styles a football team plays. Another factor to keep in mind as we come down the stretch of the NFL season is weather. Northe cities like Chicago, New York, Boston, Philly and Pittsburgh are getting cold this time of year. It's essential to check weather conditions on game day. Cold weather is tougher on offenses, as is chilling winds and snow which is also something that will become more common.

The Colts improved defense was one of the big surprises of the NFL season. But notice they haven't been as strong of late, giving up over 20 points in 4 of the last 5 games. The Bengals got them for close to 500 yards Sunday. After starting the season 5-0 under the total, the Colts offense has begun to click, while the defense has begun to bend more and Indy is 5-0 over the total the last five contests. The Bengals/Colts shootout Sunday went over the total in the first half!

You might classify the Cleveland Browns in the Chicago Bears category, too: Plodding offense, tough defense. Head coach Romeo Crennel has a great defensive mind, winning three of the last four Super Bowls as coordinator of the Patriots defense. The Browns are improved defensively under his guidance, going 8-2 under the total. And the Patriots miss Crennel. Along with his absence and numerous injuries to the secondary, the Patriots are 6-3 over the total, with a fine passing attack but a suddenly poor secondary.

Injuries, too, can change a team significantly. The NY Jets have an incredibly anemic offense rotating four QBs this season. The Jets are 4-2 under the total on the road where the offense is averaging just 7 points per game! The Steelers can't wait for Ben Roethlisberger to get healthy, and notice Pittsburgh is 5-0 under the total on the road with a tough defense and a conservative offense without Big Ben. Stats, styles, coaching and weather all contribute to overs and unders.

Super Bowl Tailgate Parties

The Super Bowl is the academy awards of American Football. The two best teams in the world play each other for the chance to reign as world champions. The prizes is not only money, but the coveted Super Bowl ring, a place in NFL history and bragging rights. From the moment September starts football fans all hope, pray, root, rub the head of their lucky doll, paint their faces, and wear team jerseys to support their favorite team. RAIDERS! RAIDERS!

Football fans also have tailgate parties that can start as early as 8am, as soon as the stadium parking lot opens. They throw balls, barbecue, listen to music, watch football highlights on portable TVs and chant for the coming victory of the home team. Now imagine all of this magnified by 200 times that is the Super Bowl.

The first Super Bowl was January 15, 1967. It is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL) (known as American Football in other parts of the world) in the United States. The Green Bay Packers opened the Super Bowl series by defeating the AFL champion Chiefs. The Packers collected $15,000 per man and the Chiefs $7,500-the largest single-game shares in the history of team sports at that time.

One of the earliest examples of a game similar to football existed in ancient China. Documents reveal that around 200 BC a game called Tsu Chu (literally 'kick ball') was played with two 30ft-high bamboo poles acting as goals.

Party supplies like paper plates, napkins, and cups are a perfect way to complete a Super Bowl Party Theme. Party decorations like inflatables, and door hangers add to the fun of a Super Bowl Party Theme. Loot bags filled with candy tucked in basket or a football piñata can be used as a centerpiece and double as an office prizes. Party favors like face paint, hats, noisemakers, party poppers, and confetti makes for an outstanding Super Bowl Party Theme.

Team colors, good food, fanastic fans and a grill with an open tailgate can make your Tailgate party the best ever. Tailgate parties started out with humble beginnings, a few drinks, snacks, and a couple sandwiches before a game. Now tailgating has become one of Americas greatest sport traditions. All you need for a tailgate party are a couple of friends, a parking lot outside a game, a grill fired up and tailgates down.

Here are some helpful tailgating tips that will help any parking lot chef prepare a pleasing feast. Always keep things simple by doing all your prep work a day before the game. Precut all food items and keep it in disposable containers for easy clean up. Make a check off list so you don't forget important items like paper plates, napkins, plastic forks, and spoons and of course the paper towels. Trash bags will surely be appreciated when it's clean up time and of course remember to bring plenty of water.

A good tailgater dresses the part so don't be caught without your team colors. You can also bring a couple extra team jerseys or sweatshirts for your friends can dress their part. A good rule to follow in tailgating is arriving 3 to 4 hours before the game so you can get a good spot and set up. Serve the main menu item an hour and a half before the game so everyone can relax and enjoy their food. Plan to leave at least an hour or two after the game so you have hang out time to discuss the game and also clean up time. Be respectful and leave the area as you found it if not cleaner.

In Defense of Donovan McNabb Again

I once again find myself this week coming to the defense of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

If that wasn't enough, check out this ignorant quote "In essence Donny, you are mediocre at best," Mondesire wrote. "And trying to disguise that fact behind some concocted reasoning that African American quarterbacks who can scramble and who can run the ball are somehow lesser field generals ... is more insulting off the field than on."

This time it's not from T.O. or Rush Limbaugh, but someone who should have McNabb's back anyway, J. Whyatt Mondesire, who publishes a newspaper for blacks and is the president of the Philadelphia branch of the NAACP, who recently wrote that the Eagles' star quarterback failed as a team leader and choked in the Super Bowl.

McNabb led the Eagles to the NFC Championship game for four straight years, and last season finally got the team over the and into the Super Bowl. He has proven himself time and time again, depsite all the nay-sayers. He has improved steadily over the past five years, and even though he is out for the year after ripping his groin, I consider him to be one of the top 3 signal-callers in the NFL.

Mondesire to my knowledge has never coached nor covered the game (and yes, this humble coorespondent has done both), and who is he to consider McNabb "a sellout."

McNabb is one of the most gutsy competitiors in the NFL and deserves everyones utmost respect, especially someone who leads a branch of the NAACP, an outfit that is supposed to be "for" the advancement of blacks." Shame on you Mr. Mondesire!

You'd figure a leader of this equal rights organization would have better things to do in the world that criticize Donovan McNabb??

Peyton Manning Indianapolis Colts Quarterback

Bo in New Orleans on March 24, 1976, Peyton Manning is the son of legendary New Orleans quarterback Archie Manning and Olivia Manning. While Peyton attended high school, Archie was the color commentator for the New Orleans Saints radio station. As a youngster, Peyton would occasionally visit off-season practices with his dad. On one occasion, then Saints coach Jim Mora, allowed Peyton to work out and toss some passes to the Saints receivers. Even more unbelievable than a high school student practicing with NFL receivers is the fact that he fit in perfectly at such a young age. While attending Isidore Newman High School, Manning served as quarterback during all 3 years. At the end of his senior season, Peyton Manning was the top recruited quarterback in the nation and was named as the Gatorade Circle of Champions National Player of the Year.

Following high school graduation, Manning decided to attend the University of Tennessee where he, once again, became a star quarterback for the team. While proving his skills on the field, Peyton Manning proved that he had equal skills in the classroom. Eaing a BA in speech communication and graduating with honors was important to Manning, which is why he decided to put his football career on hold until he eaed his degree.

As 1998 rolled around, Manning became a candidate for the NFL draft. The Indianapolis Colts welcomed Peyton Manning as their first pick in the draft and, as they say, the rest is history. Today, Peyton Manning is the quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts where he has remained since his rookie season in the NFL.

On October 29, 2005, Manning's #16 University of Tennessee player number was retired as he, his mom, dad and wife were on hand along with a capacity crowd prior to the University of Tennessee Volunteers game against the South Carolina Gamecocks. Everyone at Neyland Stadium watched as Manning's number was unveiled in the endzone. From 1994 to 1997, Peyton Manning played at the University of Tennessee where he broke nearly every passing record and led the team to 39 victories. Prior to the game, Peyton's PeyBack Foundation held a fundraiser, which raised over $12,000.00 to be used for funding grants and events involving disadvantaged youth in Knoxville.

On Friday, February 3, 2006, Peyton Manning was recognized as the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. This award was named in recognition of the legendary Chicago Bears running back, Walter Payton, who passed away in 1999. This award is the only one in the league to recognize a player's off-the-field community service in addition to his playing excellence. Connie Payton, the wife of Walter Payton, proudly presented the award. Fans around the nation celebrate Manning's accomplishments and achievements in football and in life.
